A WORD FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR
“Love Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thingâ€
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.â€
John 13:34
Over the past few years, the Lord has been blessing the sports ministries of our church family. Currently, we have twenty-two youth individual boys and girls basketball teams, beginning from 1st to 12th grade.
Recently, I met with the coaches and shared the mission and values of the overall athletic program of our church family. Allow me to share them with each of you, especially if you are a participant in the ministry.
The mission of the sports program reflects two important aspects of the ministry: Outreach and Discipleship. The Sports Ministry should provide the environment for seekers to meet Christ and for believers to grow in Him. This means that seekers are intentionally invited to participate in the program.
Vince Lombardi, Hall of Fame coach of the Green Bay Packers, was quoted as saying, “Winning Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thingâ€. In today’s professional athletics, this time honored quote probably needs to be adjusted to “Money Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing.â€
At Evergreen SGV, the motto (based on John 13:34) is “Love Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing.†If people can’t see a difference on our teams or in our leagues, then we’re not doing it right. I happen to believe that sports can be used by the church as an entry point to the kingdom of God, if the love of Christ is present.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Cory

Lewis’ classic book, The Abolition of Man. Come and learn together from C.S. Lewis about defending objective morality and other Christian worldview issues from this great read. [Note: We will have copies of this book available for purchase on the first day of class for $5.]

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another." John 13:34 Over the past few years, the Lord has been blessing the sports ministries of our church family. Currently, we have over twenty-five youth individual boys and girls basketball teams, beginning from 1st to 12th grade. Recently, I met with the coaches and shared the mission and values of the overall athletic program of our church family. Allow me to share them with each of you, especially if you are a participant in the ministry. The mission of the sports program reflects two important aspects of the ministry: Outreach and Discipleship. The Youth Sports Ministry should provide the environment for seekers to meet Christ and for believers to grow in Him. This means that seekers are intentionally invited to participate in the program. Vince Lombardi, Hall of Fame coach of the Green Bay Packers, was quoted as saying, "Winning Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing". In today’s professional athletics, this time honored quote probably need to be adjusted to "Money Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing". At Evergreen SGV, the motto (based on John 13:34) is "Love Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing". If people can’t see a difference on our teams or in our leagues, then we’re not doing it right. I happen to believe that sports can be used by the church as an entry point to the kingdom of God, if the love of Christ is present. Yours in Christ, Pastor Cory
There are currently over 25 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams in this program. The boys’ teams play in the Community Youth Council (CYC) league and the girls’ teams play in the Japanese American Optimist (JAO) league. This ministry was designed to encourage the players, parents, coaches, and team representatives to grow in their knowledge of Christ’s love and plan for their lives.
The Adult Basketball League continued to be a great source of recreation, competition, and enjoyment for those playing and watching. There are now four seasons per year. Two seasons are for the open league and the other two seasons are for the new 35+ league.

We are a Christian church. As a community of followers of Jesus Christ, we seek to encourage and help people everywhere to develop a vital relationship with him and become healthier, holier, whole human beings. While everyone is welcome at our church, our ministry is especially geared toward those who identify with the English-speaking Asian American community.
At Evergreen, our purpose is to share, in word and deed, God’s message of love and hope as it is contained in the Bible. Our church’s motto is “Come-Know & Grow-Go.” We seek to invite anyone seeking a relationship with God to “come” and meet Jesus Christ through our fellowship and ministries. We are also dedicated to being a church where his followers, whatever their stage of faith development, can “know” through prayer and “grow” toward spiritual maturity. And, we are committed to “go” and do the work of Christ in the world, both locally and globally.
Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley is an offshoot of Evergreen Baptist Church of Los Angeles. This latter church was founded in 1925 as a mission work in Boyle Heights when the area was predominantly Japanese. However, by the late 1980s, many in the congregation had moved, and we had outgrown our facilities. In 1988, the church relocated to Rosemead, where it flourished, reaching a size of 1,200 worshippers on Sunday. In order to continue to meet the needs of the members and still reach out to the community, a decision was made to go from one large church to two smaller ones. Evergreen Baptist Church of Los Angeles remained at the Rosemead site, and in 1997, a portion of the congregation left to begin a new work.
This new work, Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley, is now ten years old. Our new meeting place on Sundays is on 323 Workman Mill RD, La Puente, where we hold two worship services with 700-800 in attendance.

Dear Church Family,
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow! At 3:00 PM on Tuesday, May 22, 2007, the Lord allowed the escrow to close on the 17 acre property formerly known as Victory Outreach. Thanks be to God for His faithfulness in the purchase of this property.
We now have the honor and privilege of paying for the property. As it was with Joshua and the people of Israel, the land comes with a sacrificial price. The cost of the land and all the buildings was $20 million. Starting this month, we will begin making payments on the property.
There are two challenges set before us.
Challenge #1: We need to raise enough cash through our First Fruit Offering to cover the cost of preparing the facilities for our ministry use. The anticipated cost is over $1.5 million.
Challenge #2: We need to raise enough funds to cover our mortgage payments, which will be $83,072.97 per month. This will be our Monthly Pledge over and above our regular giving to the General Fund for the next three years.
The leadership of the Church Family is asking everyone who considers Evergreen SGV their church home to prayerfully consider two things:
First, how much the Lord is asking us to give for our First Fruits Offering. That is, what lump sum Cash Commitment does the Lord want us to give?
Second, how much does the Lord desire us to give on a monthly basis for the next three years?
Enclosed are two sheets that I hope will be helpful to you as you prayerfully consider what the Lord is asking of you. If you feel that you will not be able to participate in any way at this time and would like to be removed from the mailing list, please let us know via a phone call.
During the week of June 25, 2007, you will be receiving a second letter, which will contain a Pledge Card and envelope.
There are two dates to remember. On Sunday, July 8, 2007, we will be having a worship service on site at 2:00 PM followed by a tour of the facilities and a prayer walk. There will be no worship services or Church School at Rio Hondo College in the morning.
Sunday, August 12, 2007 will be Commitment Sunday when everyone offers to the Lord their First Fruit Offering and their Monthly Pledge for the next three years.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at cishida@ebcsgv.org.
Blessings,

Cory Ishida

“God be merciful to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us. That Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You. Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy! For You shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations on earth. Let the people praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You. Then the earth shall yield her increase; God, our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.” (Psalm 67)
The above Psalm is our prayer. We seek the Lord’s hand of blessing over this ministry in order that His ways may be known on the earth. We want to see the peoples of the earth praising the Lord. In order for them to worship Him, they must hear and respond to His Salvation. We have a variety of missionaries and ministries in a few focus countries.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:10)
Living Stones College Ministry
www.evergreensgv.org/livingstones.
Living Stones is a Christ-centered ministry dedicated to establishing a passionate generation of collegians that is:
- firmly rooted in the Word of God
- excelling in child-like faith
- maturing spiritual wisdom and understanding
- refined in godly character
The purpose is to allow the Holy Spirit to cultivate in the collegians a daily lifestyle characterized by delightful and sacrificial worship to God that will continue beyond their college years. So just as Christ was a living stone, choice and precious in the sight of God (1 Peter 2:4), collegians are considered as living stones being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:5).

Small Group Ministries - Local Bible Study Gatherings Near You
The church in Acts originally consisted of small groups that met in people’s homes. The Small Groups continue in a similar way as Bible study fellowship groups. They meet primarily in people’s homes in various locations and vary in size from five to twenty-five people. Each group gathers for a time of worship, prayer, Bible study, and fellowship. Come to the Open House (located in the Cafe on Sundays) if you are interested in learning more about this special ministry.
Click here for a list of small groups.
glo
Our mission statement comes from the account of how Moses met with God and came away with a “glow” on his face. Paul mentions how this “glow” on Moses was fading but our lives through the Lord Jesus Christ can be transformed into increasing glory, “from glory to glory.” Our mission statement is thus: “To provide young adults with a place to encounter God through the teaching of His Word and the fellowship of a community of believers, in order to be transformed for God’s glory.”
Our name is “glo”, short for “glory”. We meet on Thursday nights at 7:30pm in the Cafe. We look forward to see what the Lord has in store for us. For more information contact the church office or email dchristian@evergreensgv.org.

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” 2 Cor., 3:18
Harvesters
This senior ministry meets on one Saturday a month for a breakfast meeting (8:30 a.m.) in the Cafe. This is an excellent opportunity for senior members of our church to have breakfast, worship, moderate exercise and a guest speaker. Occasionally, this group enjoys an outing together for an enjoyable time of fellowship.
Harvesters also offers a Bible study for the senior members of our church. They currently meet on Tuesdays in the Prayer Room from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:2)

The purpose of Congregational Life Ministries:
To make disciples who make disciples.
All Christians are called to be followers of Jesus. Our ministries are designed to equip and encourage these followers as they grow in their relationship with Christ. Our desire is to help others gain knowledge of the Savior that would ultimately propel them into a life of worship and obedience toward the one who saved them.
By God’s grace, we desire to become a Spirit-led community of disciples who are more like Jesus as we:
If we are faithful in the purpose of this ministry, then we believe God will form a unified network of small groups that embody the presence and character of Christ. This is accomplished by a Spirit-led process of transformation that leads people to love, learn and live all to the glory of God.
These are biblical truths about spiritual growth that guide the way we do ministry.
Grace: We are saved by God’s grace, not by how much we grow.
(Rom. 3:24; Eph. 2:8-9)
Relationships: Spiritual growth happens in a personal relationship with Jesus and is nurtured in relationships with others.
(Mt. 11:28-30; Php. 2:12-13)
Obedience: All Christians are called to follow and obey Jesus and to make new disciples.
(Mk. 1:15-18; Lk. 9:23; Mt. 5:13-16; 28:20)
Word of God: God guides and transforms us through prayer and His Word.
(Col. 1:9-12; 2 Cor. 13:9; 1 Thess. 5:16-18; Psa. 119:9-11; 2 Tim. 3:16)
Trust: We trust that the Holy Spirit will grow us in His own way and timing.
(Php. 1:6; 1 Cor. 3:7)
Holistic process: True transformation is a life-long process involving the whole person.
(1 Cor. 3:18; Eph. 4:15; 1 Sam. 16:7; Rom. 12:2)
