Make a Difference by Kay Carey

A couple years ago, our church motto was updated to include “Make a Difference” at the end of the previous motto “Loving God and Loving Others”.  I really like this new addition because it emphasizes what will be the natural outcome of Loving God and others.

My all-time favorite classic Christmas movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) starring James Stewart. For me, this movie is a great reminder of how much one’s life can impact so many lives.  For those who haven’t seen the movie, the story line goes like this.  A guardian angel intervenes in the life of a despairing businessman (George) who is about to commit suicide by showing what life would have been like if he had never existed.  After seeing how his life has made such a difference in many lives in his family and community, he realizes how influential/impactful his life has been and consequently all his problems become very insignificant.

God taught me to think more about how I would want my life to impact positively in other people’s lives when I first saw it many years ago.  As I get older, this desire gets stronger realizing how fast each year passes by.  The Bible reminds us how we should pray: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12).

It’s my prayer that what we do and say each day would positively impact other people around us to bring them closer to God, our Creator.   After all, we exist to bring glory to God by pointing to Christ who died for our sins on the cross so that others could also experience the joy of God’s amazing grace and love shown thru His only Son, Jesus Christ.  As the Easter season approaches, let’s try to reflect on how much God loves us and what He wants us to do and say by making a difference in our daily lives.  James 2:26 says, “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead”.

Even a small gesture of kindness or just a smile to those who seem downcast in our community may lift their spirits. Check out the (Opportunities To Serve) board at the open house area (next to the LCD) in the lobby for the current OTS in which you can get involved. You can also access the same information on the church website ( If you have any new OTS you would like to promote among our church family, visit the website for details.  Let's join in what God is doing and let Jesus shine thru our acts of faith and love.
