Loving Our Neighbors at Don Julian

By Sandy Tanaka

“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’” Matthew 22:37-40

Loving our neighbors at Don Julian Elementary School has been shown in different ways over the past years. Whether it is through providing students with backpacks or distributing needed food from the Community Pantry, our Church family has forged a relationship with the staff and students of Don Julian, sharing in God’s goodness.

We will be hosting Don Julian students and their families for a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Saturday, November 22. The number of families attending the Thanksgiving Celebration Luncheon continues to grow each year. Guests feel our love and are comfortable coming to Evergreen.

As in the past two years, God has been so faithful in answering our prayers for guests, food donations, and volunteers:

·         More than 300 guests from Don Julian are expected. God has moved 42 Evergreen families to share the meal with our guests.

·         More than 150 Evergreen volunteers have signed up to help during the event in the areas of hospitality, food preparation, food service, decorations, set-up and clean-up.

·         Through your generous contributions, 45 baked turkeys, 40 cans of cranberry sauce, and 64 pumpkin pies are being donated. Mashed potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy, and rolls also will be served.

Although we have fulfilled our food donations, there are still opportunities to serve at this event. If you are available and willing, please consider any open volunteer areas that are listed HERE. We would love for you join with us in loving our neighbors!

If you are unable to serve on November 22, please be with us in spirit. We ask that you be in prayer for our volunteers in preparing their servant’s hearts with compassion and that the hearts of our Don Julian guests be softened to be receptive to the gospel.

Praise God for this great blessing and a chance again to show our love to our Don Julian families! May all glory be His as we give thanks and follow His commandment of loving our neighbors.
