(Reminder Note: The Thursday entry will be devoted to marriage and family. Currently, the emphasis is on raising children)
Brand new parents are always faced with a dilemma. Just how do you go about raising children? What’s the method? Is there a secret?
There are at least four choices parents have when it comes to raising their kids.
The first choice is raising them by chance, that is, without any plan, guidance or instruction. This would be a reactionary way of raising children.
Another choice is to raise them by default. This method of child-rearing involves raising them according to how you were raised. You would treat them as your parents treated you if you found it favorable or you would treat them exactly opposite of the way your parents treated you if you found it unfavorable. This may be the most common way parents raise their kids.
A third way is to raise them according to worldly guidelines. There are experts in every field of endeavor including parenting. When we were raising our children, Dr. Benjamin Spock was the resident expert who later recanted the core of what he taught as being erroneous.
The final way of raising children depends on guidance from the Bible. The Word of God is filled with the wisdom necessary to raise children in a godly manner. For instance, the Word teaches how to discipline children, which is always a quandary for parents. It also reveals the most important thing to teach children as they grow and mature.
Paul wrote, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3:16-17. This verse applies not only to adults, but children as well.
So, how should we raise our children? There is no better way than by the Word of God.
Something to think about…
