Blessed to be a Blessing

This week, I had a thought. The Olympics are going to be starting up Friday, July 27, and it’s amazing how we can get caught up in the events rooting for Team USA. I enjoyed watching Michael Phelps win his record haul of Gold with the help of incredible teammates in the relay (an anchor leg for the ages).

So I thought to myself… I should reinstate television in our household so we can watch the Olympics.

Over twenty-one months ago, we gave up television so that we could be a blessing. Let me explain.

When God made His covenant with Abraham (at the time known as Abram), He told him in Genesis 12:2, “And I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing”. God then ended the promise by saying, “…and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

God blesses His children so that they can be a blessing to others. It is all a part of the “Loving God, Loving Others” from the Greatest Commandment found in Matthew 22:36-40.

In our culture, we are in the business of turning our blessings inward rather than outward. We get a raise from work and we immediately wonder how we can spend it ourselves. We think about upgrading rather than downsizing in order to bless others.

Cable television in our household went out the window so that we could support orphans. We didn’t convert our old antenna so we cannot receive a digital transmission. So we are TV-less.

There is one thing I have learned about trying to be a blessing. Whenever we try to bless others, we get blessed. God is good.

The lack of television has given me time to do things like write a blog or read a book. I am even considering writing a book.

One more thing… I am not advocating that everyone should give up television. I would still love watching the Olympics or UCLA beating USC in football this year.

But, I believe that this has been God’s specific will for us and it has been a great blessing to be a blessing.

If you feel as though you have been blessed (most Americans have been blessed abundantly), perhaps you can ask the Lord how He wants you to be a greater blessing to others.

Something to think about...
