The first three things we can do that would help us discern the will of God is to submit our hearts, search our desires and seek guidance from above (pray). The following can help us continue discernment process.
Study the scriptures
“Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105.
The motto of the Detroit Bible College is “Discovering God’s will by studying God’s Word.”
There is no clearer way of discerning the will of God than studying the Bible. The purpose of God’s Word is to lead us into the truth and give us an understanding of God’s way. Consistent time in His Word will help mature us as followers of Jesus.
The Bible can also inform us on what is not God’s will for our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” Both correction and reproof serve the purpose of moving us away from the things that are not God’s will for us.
I once read a quote which may be helpful for us to read. It said, “When you open your Bible, God opens His mouth. When you close your Bible, God closes His mouth.” May God’s mouth always be open to us.
Solicit the counsel of the wise
“Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.” Proverbs 11:14.
God first created Adam. He then looked at Adam and said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18b
We were not created to be alone. No man or woman is an island surrounded by a sea of isolation. We were created to be in fellowship with others for a host of reasons.
One reason is to receive support and counsel from others. The Bible is replete with verses that speak of the importance of others in life’s journey and the discovery of God’s will.
Proverbs 11:14 speaks directly to the importance of guidance from others. Guidance as referred to in the Bible means the discernment of God’s will for our lives and not simply human guidance with human knowledge and understanding.
Seeking God’s will for your life? Submit your hearts, search your desires and seek guidance from above, study the scriptures and solicit the counsel of the wise.
