Testing the Spirits

There are times when we need to put on our spiritual antennae and test the spirits to whether or not something is orthodox or of the Holy Spirit.

In fact, we should always be examining, evaluating and testing. It is so easy to be led astray into things that are either unhealthy or unsound.

Here are four simple tests in determining whether or not something is of the Lord.

Test No. 1: “Jesus is Lord”.

I Corinthians 12:3 says, “Therefore I make known to you, that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus is accursed’, and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’, except by the Holy Spirit.”

A spirit other than the Holy Spirit will not attest to the fact that Jesus is Lord, that is, the Son of God, fully human and fully God, bodily raised from the grave and crucified for our sins. Jesus is Lord is an important test.

Test No. 2: God’s Word.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 teaches us that “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

Reproof points out what is wrong while correction points to what is right. Everything needs to be measured against the yardstick of God’s Word.

Test No. 3: God’s Glory.

1 Corinthians 10:31states, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Everything should go to God’s glory. If something or someone else is getting God’s glory it is suspect. Always ask the question, “Who’s getting the glory?”

Test No. 4: Spiritual Discernment

1 Corinthians 12:10 says, “…and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.”

The Apostle Paul teaches us that there is a spiritual gift of distinguishing between spirits. By and through the Holy Spirit, we can discern what is of God and what is not. Pray for the Holy Spirit’s power of discernment.

After testing the spirits, follow the exhortation of Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, which says “But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good…”

We need to examine everything carefully and hold on to what is good and discard what is not good. Never throw away the baby with the bath water. Examine, hold on and discard.

Thanks be to God that His Word gives us some guidelines in testing the spirits.
