The “Even If” Moments of Life

There are moments in life when up seems down and down seems up… when right seems wrong and wrong seems right… when close seems far off and far off seems so close.

These are the “Even If” moments of life – when what we believe becomes either a firm reality or just an insecure option. These “Even If” moments of life declare our transcendent trust in what we cannot see or our delicate dependence on only that which we can see.  These “Even If” moments of life will tell us whether our faith is a constant or a variable… a pillar or an ideal… a solid rock or shifting sand.

Cancer… one of those “Even If” moments of life.

Cancer… one of the most dreaded words in the English language.  When uttered by an attending physician, a heart becomes heavy, a throat becomes parched and a life becomes disrupted.

Cancer… more a verdict than a diagnosis… more a judicial sentence than a medical condition… more a destination of death than a journey of life.

And so we pray.  We faithfully ask God for a healing.  But what if healing doesn’t come?

The “Even If’s” of life are usually preceded by the “What If’s” of life.

“What If” I am not healed?  “What If” the doctors are wrong?  “What If” the treatment doesn’t work?  “What If” the prayers go unanswered?

If we walk by faith, the “What If’s” of life will transform into the “Even If’s” of life.

The “What If’s” are the questions of life.  The “Even If’s” are the proclamations of living.

“What If” requires a response.  “Even If” is a response.

“What If” wants a solution.  “Even If” is a resolution.

“What If” is an interrogation.  “Even If” is a declaration.

So, Beloved…

“Even if the healing doesn’t come

And life falls apart

And dreams are still undone

You are God, You are good

Forever faithful One…

Even if the healing doesn’t come”

So, “Even If” we are not restored… “Even If” up seems down and down seems up; and right seems wrong and wrong seems right; and close seems far off and far off seems so close, we still trust the Trustworthy… we still believe the Believable… we still hold onto the Way, the Truth and the Life, we still embrace the One who has embraced us… Jesus, God’s only begotten Son.

“Even if the healing doesn’t come…

You are God and we will bless You

As the Good and Faithful One

You are God and we will bless You

Even if the healing doesn’t come

You’re still the Great and Mighty One

We trust You always

You’re working all things for our good

We’ll sing your praise”

(Even If by Kutless)

“Even If” is our declaration of dependence on a true and faithful God who loves us and has given us the hope of eternity Even If the healing doesn’t come.

Something to think about…
