The Subtle Influences of Life

Many of us hold on to ungodly beliefs. By ungodly beliefs, I mean belief in things that are contrary to the Word of God. For instance, the Bible teaches that God created the heavens and the earth in seven days. The Bible does not teach that God evolved the earth over billions of years.

It is quite understandable how a person educated over the past half century would come to have confidence in the Theory of Evolution or any such thing, which would be contrary to God’s Word. The influences on our minds can be quite subtle.

In 2004, two August issues of TIME Magazine honored the passing of Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the double-helical structure of DNA. Indeed, he should be remembered as a great research scientist. But there were some quotes within the remembrances, which subtly continued the indoctrination we received throughout our academic lives regarding evolution.

The August 9th eulogy was written by his partner James D. Watson. In it he said that Crick and he discovered the double-helical structure of DNA, which “showed that the secret of life was a large molecule”. So life comes from the double-helical nature of DNA and not from God?

The remembrance goes on to say that “From early adolescence, Crick had no trust with truths arrived at by religious revelation as opposed to observation and experimentation. Upon learning that Cambridge University’s science-dominated new college was planning to build a Christian chapel, he resigned from the rank of its Fellows. ‘Perpetuating mistakes from the past’ was not Crick’s way to move forward.”

The implication is clear. The things of Christian faith are the perpetuation of mistakes. The remembrance is meant to honor Crick and show him as a man of courage, resolve and brilliance. Hence, he must be right.

In a later issue, TIME quoted a piece they did in 1971, describing the “exhilaration and impact of their breakthrough discovery”. I will note one quote, which again can subtly influence our thinking. The article read, “As a basic ingredient of the genes in the cells of all living organisms, DNA is truly the master molecule of life. [The discovery] was one of the great events in science, comparable to the splitting of the atom or the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species.

Here, TIME is validating the Theory of Evolution by exalting Darwin’s writings to “one of the great events in science”, when in fact, there is nothing scientific about the Theory of Evolution except for the fact that it is a hypothetic postulation, if to be believed requires great faith.

Subtle, isn’t it? Would you have questioned it? Or would you have just accepted it?

As stated in Romans 12, God wants us to be transformed by the renewing of our thinking. In what other areas are we being subtly and not so subtly inundated with a worldly view? So, what about homosexuality?

Something to think about…
