“Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s. Tomorrow go down against them.” 2 Chronicles 20:15b, 16a
Two brothers who grew up in our church family received some sound advice from their father. He told them that “Half of life is just showing up”. Showing up is an incredibly important part of life.
When the enemies of Judah rose up against them, King Jehoshaphat was told by the Lord that he should not fear because “the battle is not yours but the God’s”. Imagine that, God was going to fight the battle for Judah. However in the very next breath, God tells Jehoshaphat, “Tomorrow go down against them”, in other words, “Just show up”.
David tells Goliath before he fights him, “This day the LORD will deliver you up into my hands…” (1 Samuel 17:46) David knew that the battle belonged to the Lord. His responsibility was to “Just show up”.
We are called by God to “walk by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Part of our faith walk is to “Just show up” and let God be God.
And so the brothers received great advice from their beloved father for “Half of life IS just showing up”.
The inquisitive brothers asked their wise father the natural follow-up question. “What about the other half of life?” to which their father responded, “Just show up and find out!”
That is exactly what Jehoshaphat and David did. They showed up and found out just what their God could do.
Something to think about…
