Four Pillars of Evergreen SGV

I often get asked why and how Evergreen grew over the years. We have experienced steady church growth since 1977. We initially grew from a church of about 40 worshippers to a Sunday morning average attendance of over 1200, which is very large for an Asian American church.

I normally tell people that God decided to grow us. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.” We should never lose sight of the fact that it is God who provides the growth when it comes to church growth.

Upon acknowledging God’s role in His church, the Lord spoke to me from the very outset that I was to build the church family based on ten scriptures that He laid upon my heart. The first four were to become the pillars of the church from which we should never deviate.

Here are the four in brief.

The Preeminence of Christ

We are a people in Christ. John the Baptist said in John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.” We must always strive to place Jesus first and foremost in the ministry. Salvation comes through Christ alone. We must endeavor to “Keep the main thing, the main thing”.

The Prominence of Faith

We are a people who walk by faith. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:7 “…for we walk by faith, not by sight.” A people of faith say, “Believing is seeing” rather than “Seeing is believing”. We should always move by faith rather than just our rational thinking.

The Precedence of the Word

We are a people of the Word. Psalm 119:105 says “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” We believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God in the original transcripts. The Word of God is trustworthy in all matters of faith and life. We are all about “Taking God at His Word.”

The Power of Prayer

We are a people of prayer. Paul exhorted us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to “Pray without ceasing.” The most dynamic tool a believer has at his or her disposal is the power of prayer. With it, mountains can be moved and demons can be cast out of lives. “With God, nothing is impossible.”

Over the years, we have tried to be as faithful as possible to all ten scriptures from the Lord. Perhaps it’s the reason why the Lord has allowed us to grow over the years.
