The Quote Masters

There are certain people who say or write things that are infused with wisdom. As a result, they are often quoted. I think of these people as Quote Masters.

I personally love all of the quotes attributed to John Wooden. He was a Quote Master. My favorite Wooden basketball quote is “Be quick, but don’t hurry”. I associate this quote with James 1:19, which says, “But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger”.

My favorite Wooden quote about character is “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are”. I associate this quote with Proverbs 22:1, which says, “A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, favor is better than silver and gold.”

As much as I love Quote Master Wooden, my all-time favorite Quote Master is probably Jim Elliot who died on the banks of the Curaray River in the jungles of Ecuador on January 8, 1956. Elliot was a gifted young man who was very reflective about life and his faith. He could have done anything in life and been extremely successful. He ended up choosing what was best in life and died for it.

For my 300th blog, I thought I would share a few of my favorite quotes from Quote Master, Jim Elliot.

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” This is my all-time favorite quote by a Quote Master. It reflects the very core of how to I would love to live my life. I desire to be willing to give up whatever is necessary to gain more of Jesus.

“When the time comes to die, make sure that all you have to do is die!” As I get older, this quote becomes more pertinent. I hope that when I die I have taken care of all the things that are needful. Forgive those who need forgiveness. Ask for forgiveness from those against whom I have sinned. Tell my loved ones that I love them. Be right with the Lord.

“Forgive me for being so ordinary while claiming to know so extraordinary a God.” I hope that I live my ordinary life doing extraordinary things because I am in the will of an amazing and unparalleled God.

“God always gives his best to those who leave the choice with him.” Even as I write this blog, I hope that I will always be in the will of God. I desire to have the attitude of Jesus who said whole addressing His Father in heaven, “…yet not My will, but Yours be done." (Luke 22:42)

These are just a few quotes from my favorite Quote Master.

One more thought… there is a Master Quote Master (MQM). His name is Jesus. If you would like to read His quotes, they are found in the Bible. Turn to the Gospels and read the quotes of the Master Quote Master. His quotes will give you both life and life eternal.

Something to think about…
