In All He Does, He Prospers

Psalm 1:2–3 (ESV)

“2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”

For those of you who are memorizing Scripture for 2014, this is last article on Psalm 1.  Continue to recite Psalm 1 each day and for the month of March begin to memorize Matthew 22:37-40.

The Psalmist promises that the person who delights in God’s teaching and walks in His ways will prosper in all he does.  It’s similar to the promise made to Joshua in Joshua 1:8 – “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

However, we know from personal experience and from biblical testimony (from the lives of Jesus, Paul, Joseph, Jeremiah, Habbakuk and more!) that being successful in everything you do is a matter of interpretation.  It’s fair to say that from an earthly perspective, the God-fearing man definitely does not always thrive in all he does.  He actually suffers a lot and even appears to fail in many of his virtuous endeavors.  Therefore, what does God mean when He promises that He will prosper you in all you do?

The Hebrew root word that’s translated “prosper” means “to accomplish what is intended”.  In Genesis 24:21, Abraham’s servant was sent to Abraham’s homeland to find a wife for Issac.  When the servant arrived at his destination, he saw a women approaching him and the scriptures read, “The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered (same Hebrew root word) his journey or not.”  In other words, the servant looked at the woman and wondered if the intended purpose of his journey (to find Issac a wife) was being fulfilled or not.  To the servant’s delight, God had indeed prospered his way.

So, God is promising us that when we delight in Him and live in trust and obedience to His ways that He will fulfill the purposes of our intentions.  What a promise!  To all of you who take great joy in the goodness, forgiveness and justice of our God; know with certainty that He will accomplish your intentions to share His love and truth with others and He will bring to pass your desire to honor and glorify Him in and through your life.  He promises to fulfill what you intend as you love and trust Him.  No man, no organization, no terminal illness, no evil power and no misfortune can stop Him.  As Psalm 1:6 says, “The way of the wicked will perish” but those who delight in Him will remain and ultimately prosper in ALL he does.
